risk, what's that?

We lightly use the word risk in everyday conversation. “I no longer want to fly with ** Air, too risky ”, "I'll pay, little risk”, “There is a risk, no Doc?”, is an example of an expression we commonly hear. But, what is the real risk? From the example of that expression, it seems that we use the word risk to describe the possibility of something bad or unpleasant happening. For the possibility of something good or pleasant happening, usually we use other words, namely "opportunity". Understanding insurance must start by discussing risks. Definition of risk, at least in the context of insurance, is the uncertainty of the loss (uncertainty of loss). A loss is any bad or unpleasant event that can be measured financially.

Truly, all the time to grow old, from second to second, we are dealing with risks or uncertainties of loss. Let's take an example of an employee who works in Jakarta but lives in Bogor. He has several options for going to and from work. He can drive his car and runs the risk of being involved in a road accident that causes damage to his car, bodily injury even claimed his life. He can avoid the risk of a road accident by taking a Commuter Line train, but at the same time he faces other uncertainties such as a train crash, injury when jostling into or out of the train, or the risk of pickpocketing.

So, when in school we are introduced to the law of conservation of energy, that energy cannot be destroyed, just changing from one form to another, There should also be a law of conservation of risk. Indeed the risk cannot be completely eliminated, it just changes shape depending on the choices we make in doing something.

When the employee is in his comfortable and safe office, he still faces various risks or uncertainties that can bring losses. Starting from the possibility of being slashed by the sharp edges of the paper, slipping on a freshly mopped slick tile floor, smothered in hot freshly brewed coffee, electrocuted from the copier cable, stuck in elevator door, to be trapped in a fire on a high floor and then desperate to jump through a window or afraid to jump but also die of roasting or because of inhaling thick smoke.

So many bad things that might happen to everyone, even in a place that looks very safe. The possibilities remain an uncertainty because we have no knowledge of when it will happen in the future and what the consequences will be..Then, what should we do?? Should we always expect anxiously worrying about those bad possibilities? Or, let's just forget everything, leave it all to the Almighty, what happens then happens? Or, is there anything we can do to manage the risk?
